I have a hard time believing the Global Warming arguments. I mean, I know that the Earth has been warmer than it is now. At least, I know it because science tells me so. I also know the Earth has been colder than it is now. I know this because of the painting shown above. Washington crossed the ice choked Delaware on Chri$tma$ Eve. The Delaware icing up around Chri$tma$ was common in the late 1700s because of a mini Ice Age that swept across the world in the 1500s. That ice age is why Italy produces wine and Germany and England make beer. Grapes wouldn't grow in the northern countries, but grain would. The mini Ice Age ended in the early 19th century.

Now, Global Warming fans and enthusiasts will be quick to point out that the temperatures are rising faster than they ever have before. But, we've only been keeping records of temperatures since the 18th century. And, they are quick to point out, you can't prove global warming by local temperature variations.

Mr. Tipper Gore, she of the "Rock music is bad" camp, recently starred in a movie called Incovenient Truths. Now, it turns out, some of the truths in the film were exagerations. Al said, "I believe it is appropriate to have an over-representation of factual presentations on how dangerous it is, as a predicate for opening up the audience to listen to what the solutions are, and how hopeful it is that we are going to solve this crisis."

So he's lying about Global Warming because Global Warming is so important?

Here's what bugs me about Global Warming: We're being told by some scientists that Global Warming will raise sea levels and kill everything on the planet. And, we're assured, the temperatures will continue to rise! Other scientists are telling us that Global Warming will cause a mini Ice Age killing everything on the planet. Basically, they're saying that the Earth might be able to regulate it's own temperature, and that temperatures will go down.

So, Global Warming fans are saying what the weatherman says: "It might--It might not." And they're saying that overstating the facts and lying are good because the issue is so important.

Isn't that what Bush did with WMDs and Iraq? Lie?

Your logic about global warming is right on track with Representative Inhofe's of Oklahoma. He has said that armadillo's live in Oklahoma now, but they used to live in Nebraska. It got colder in Nebraska so they migrated south because they like it warmer. I think any evidence such as this from an animal with as much intellectual instinct as the armadillo is sound and should be used as undeniable evidence that the world is indeed getting colder.

The Earth gets cold and warm, is my point. There will be another ice age. And it will end and get warmer. While I expect human activity to have some impact, I doubt it is as significant as Gore & Company would have us believe.

You know, you're right that the the proof is inconclusive. But let's get real. We pollute the Earth now more than we ever have ... and that will have its consequences. Let's not stick our heads in the sand and say 'there's not proof' ... common sense, man, common sense! It doesn't take much to take a few steps to be environmentally responsible ... but b/c of the personal invconvenience it is all to easy to wash our hands of it. Sorry, you know I love you. But I take the environment seriously.

Ellie, where did I say that we could pollute to our hearts' content? Exactly where did I say I didn't respect or care about the environment? I said that the Global Warming fans exagerate. As soon as we can control the weather, I'll buy into Global Warming.

No need to apologize. You didn't call me an idiot, question my manhood or my sanity, nor did you tell me to shut up for the good of the planet. Your opinion is always welcome here, whether you agree with me or not. The love runs both ways, babe.

You're right. You didn't condone wanton pissing in the ocean! I let me ecosensitivity cloud my reading. Thanks for understanding. ;-)

Is anything portrayed accurately by the media, or in general consciousness for that matter? I guess if they're going to lie they might as well be telling us lies that might actually benefit us in the long run. Any and all exagerrations about global warming certainly have a lot of catching up to do with the exaggerated denial about how much damage is being done to the planet (on the whole, not just warming) rampant in society.

That said I still remember the PMRC...

The thing is, global warming can cause it to get colder. The earth's weather is a complex system and that makes it unpredictable.

That doesn't mean it won't be devastating.

Here's what I mean: melting ice in Antarctica changes the salinity and base temperature of water in a specific ocean current. That current then shifts.

The shifting ocean current affects wind patterns.

The changing wind patterns mean that, for example, an area that used to get wet winds now gets less wind carrying rain. It dries up.

If this is farmland or habitat that depends on that moisture, that is a problem. The habitat destruction that is already a problem on this planet is exacerbated. Maybe there is starvation because farmlands don't have water. Maybe an area that was grassland becomes desert.

Of course it's unpredictable, but the possibilities are horrendous.

And really, it wouldn't hurt us to use greener technologies, drive less, etc.

BTW, James Inhofe has gotten more than a million dollars from the Oil/gas lobby

You hit the nail on the head: it's unpredictable. It could get colder, it could get warmer. Hell, it could even stay the same. (Hence the word "unpredictable".) But, it's been warmer in the past, and colder in the past. Does human activity contribute. I think so, just not to the extent Global Warmers tell me. And I agree that we should use as much renewable resources as we can. It just makes good sense. And hey, pray for that volcano to blow in Indonesia. That'll bring Global temperatures down, and everyone can relax.

And if we're to disbelieve anyone who has taken money from special interests, then we should disbelieve all politicians. They take money from special interests all the time. Why do you think Democrats and Republicans are supporting the telecoms in their fight to charge google and eBay for the traffic they get.

Distrust all politicians? Surely you jest?

But seriously... global warming, by itself, may not be that big of a problem.

The problem is that it will exacerbate the problems we already face - species are going extinct faster than they have in 65 million years. Habitat is being destroyed, carcinogens are being pumped into the water and atmosphere...

All these things together, not just global warming, are the looming catastrophe that I'm worried about.

And it's totally preventable if politicians would get their heads out of their asses.

I agree with a lot of what you say. But there have been species die offs in the past. I don't see any Sabertooths in the hills. Each of the ages of dinosaurs was preceeded by a mass extinction that boggles the mind. Has Man contributed to the extinction rate? Sure. See any Wooly Mammoths. If only politicians could have protected them....

We face a serious habitat loss all over the world, not just the rain forest. Urban sprawl is pushing wildlife into smaller and smaller pockets.

Carcinogins in the water? I remember the 60s and 70s when every celebrity closed their act with "Help end pollution" comments. Rivers that were dead in the 60s are alive today. The US has cut its emissions dramatically since the 60s. Could they do more? Maybe. But at what cost? Are you willing to stop the production of, say, computer processors? Are you ready to sit at current processor levels until science can prove Global warming has stopped? Are you ready to walk everywhere to save gas? Why aren't you demanding that your town build more sidewalks? Oh, wait! Concrete production causes carcinogins to be introduced into the atmosphere. Are you willing to live like people in Mexico or Afghanistan to reduce carcinogins being put into the atmosphere? Until a large percentage of people in this country answer "yes" to that question, politicians won't be able to do a damned thing, either with their heads in or out of their asses.

You're oversimplifying the problem and exaggerating the cost.

Species die offs have occured in the past without human intervention and with no human population to be affected. It will be quite different with billions of humans struggling for resources - firewood, grazing land, farmland...

And there are a lot of simple steps to take. Turn down the AC, use it only when necessary, same goes for heat in the winter. Drive an efficient car and drive it less. Make your house more energy efficient. Walk or bike more. Eat less meat.

On a governmental level... mandating mileage standards is not going to destroy the economy. Tax incentives for clean energy might even stimulate the economy.

Hey, I agree with you! Except for the Global Warming thing. We should turn down the AC. We should walk more. We should use recycled products. We should treat the Earth better than we are.

But as long as people are willing to buy SUVs with horrible milage, the car lobby will fork over huge quantities of cash to prevent mandating milage requirements.

As long as people get their jollies by purchasing starter castles and McMansions that cost more to heat and cool each month than I earn, the building lobby will send gobs of cash to DC to stop legislation mandating stricter energy requirements. In Washington, money, not constiuents, matter.

But none of this changes the fact that Gore "exaggerated." He deliberatly gave us false information to persuade us to his point of view. If the Global Warming were true, why would he have exaggerated? If I can be angry that Bush lied about WMDs in Iraq, then I have to be angry that Gore lied. And if Gore lied about his supporting arguments, can his thesis be valid?
